As we age, our eyelids begin to sag, and the muscles around them tend to weaken. The results are as expected: Excess fat gathers below and above your eyelids, leading to droopy eyelids.

Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) aims to remove the excess skin and/or fat to give you younger-looking eyelids. The procedure can also improve vision.

Preparation

During the consultation, the surgeon will ask you to provide your previous and current conditions, including diabetes, glaucoma and thyroid problems. They will also note your use of herbal remedies, vitamins, medications, tobacco and alcohol.

You will then discuss your aspirations and motivations with the surgeon in a way that aims for the most favourable outcome.

Before your surgery, the surgeon will measure and your eyelids to better understand what can work for you.

Finally, a professional in the clinic will photograph your eyelids from all possible angles. The images will be used to assess and plan your surgery.

Before the surgery

Blepharoplasty is not as invasive as many other cosmetic surgeries. The surgeon will inject numbing agents into your eyelids and administer intravenous medication for relaxation.

The procedure may include lower eyelids, upper eyelids or both.

> Upper eyelids

The surgeon will make a series of incisions along the fold of your eyelid, remove excess skin, fat, and muscle and then, close the cut.

> Lower eyelids

To work on your lower eyelids, the surgeon will either make a cut below the eyelashes or within the lower lid. They will then close the incision.

In case your pupil is close to your upper eyelid, the surgeon will perform ptosis along with the Blepharoplasty, which provides additional support to the muscles.

Post-surgery and recovery

You will spend some time in the recovery room, in which healthcare professionals will monitor you for complications.

You can leave to recover at home the same day.

Swelling and brusing subside within 10-20 days.

Results

Some patients report blurred vision, wet eyes, numb eyelids, swelling, discomfort, and sensitivity to light following the surgery.

Your doctor will provide you with a comprehensive recovery plan.

Results: Most people are happy with Blepharoplasty, and some report results that last a lifetime. Sometimes, the saggy eyelids may come back.
