When we talk about hair transplants, male patients come into mind first. However, there are many ladies who also need hair transplantation and get it done. Women usually have a different type of hair loss. It usually happens on a large area or the entire scalp, in form of overall hair thinning, which makes hair transplant difficult.
Causes
The Ludwig scale, which ranges from stage I to stage III, is a method of classifying female pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia).
Androgenetic Alopecia
Female pattern baldness, also called androgenetic alopecia, is hair loss that affects women. It’s similar to male pattern baldness, except that women can lose their hair in a different pattern than men. It is the most common type of hair loss and occurs in approximately 20% of women.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is a condition that causes hair loss out in small patches, which can be unnoticeable. However, these patches may link and become visible. When the immune system targets the hair follicles, the disease develops, resulting in hair loss. Sudden hair loss on the scalp, and in some cases, the brows, eyelashes, and face, as well as other regions of the body, can occur.
Telogen Effluvium
Telogen effluvium is a kind of hair loss marked by thinning hair and increased shedding. It is more common in women and is usually triggered by a disorder in the hair cycle. It may be chronic but also be a temporary phenomenon due to a stressful event, high fever, severe dietary deficiency, or chronic blood loss from heavy menstruation.
Loose Anagen Syndrome
Loose anagen syndrome (LAS) is a hair disease in which the hair is ‘loose’ and can be pulled out from the scalp no pain.
Traction Alopecia
Traction alopecia is a type of hair loss caused by tight hairstyles. This is frequently caused by the sufferer wearing their hair in a particularly tight ponytail, pigtails, or braids.
Chemicals
Some hair styling chemicals can cause permanent damage to the hair and scalp, resulting in hair loss.
Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania is a mental disorder classified under Obsessive-Compulsive and related disorders and involves repetitive, overwhelming urges to pull hair from the scalp, eyebrows, eyelids, and other parts of the body.
Scarring Alopecia
Scarring alopecia is a term used to describe a group of hair loss disorders that result in the irreversible destruction of hair follicles due to the creation of scar tissue in the skin. Some form of scarring alopecia may also occur in postmenopausal women.
Pregnancy
Some women may experience hair thinning and shedding due to stress or shock during the pregnancy. Hormonal changes and the stress of pregnancy may cause temporary hair loss.
Hair Transplantation Procedures for Women
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
The FUE method is based on extracting hair follicles from donor areas that are resistant to the factors that cause hair loss and transferring them to areas with open hair or baldness using special tools without leaving any lines or scars. The surgeon determines how many grafts the patient will need during the postoperative examination.
DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)
DHI, which stands for Direct Hair Implantation, is the latest technique in hair transplantation.
The FUE and DHI methods are relatively similar but differ in one way: With the FUE technique, hair follicles are placed onto a sanitary area to open up channels in the receiver area, but by using the DHI technique, the surgeon can load follicles into an instrument called the Choi pen and plant each follicle into the area of concern, without having to open up channels first.
Step by Step DHI Hair Transplant Procedure
- The surgeon transmits the harvested grafts and donor hair into the Choi pen.
- The graft is gently inserted into the hollow needle at the tip of the implant pen and handed back to the surgeon.
- The needle is then inserted into the scalp at an exact angle of 40-45 degrees by the surgeon. They then insert the graft by pressing down on the plunger while the incision site is made.
- Typically, 2-6 Choi implanters and around 15-16 needles are utilised continuously throughout a procedure. The instruments are passed back and forth between the physicians and their assistants.
- The DHI implanter gives a surgeon complete control over the entire process, culminating in a natural-looking result.
